Backup Software| Comparing Local And Online Solutions

Backup software has traditionally focused on synchronizing data with local devices (e.g. external hard disks or burning copies to CDs). However, the modern approach is to upload your data to online services and servers. In this post, we’ll see what the advantages and disadvantages of each method actually are.

Online backups have long been used to backup websites between servers by use of scripts or small piece of software. Increases in broadband speeds now mean however that home users can also consider uploading their critical data on to online servers. This is usually done using a commercial service (e.g. live drive) that provide client software which provides the scheduling and customization features.

The advantage of online backup software is that it can be completely automated to run in the background making backups as and when files are changing. You also do not require any backup disks or hardware to make the copies sold this is a perfect solution for people using their laptop while on the road. However, you have to consider the costs involved (usually monthly subscription fees) as well as the data limits that may be imposed.

In comparison, using backup software that synchronizes files with local hard disk (e.g. SyncToy) is a much simpler approach and allows you the flexibility to make multiple duplicates copies if so desired. Even burning a CD or DVD can be considered as a worthwhile backup approach.

The cost of making local copies works out a lot cheaper than the online backup subscriptions, and you have the flexibility to store as much data as you can (the only limit is the size of the hard drive or the number of blank discs you have). The one gripe about this approach is the fact that it has to be manually invoked each time you do your backups so there is the danger of you forgetting to do backups are seeing this as being a chore (which may result in backups being done infrequently).
