The Eco Friendly Solar Powered Attic Fans
May 23, 2011 – 3:51 amSolar powered attic fans are devices that are mounted on top of roofs and used to remove moisture and humidity from attic spaces. This way they help maintain a cooler interior atmosphere in the hotter summer months and a dry atmosphere during the colder months. This in turn results in energy cost savings and lower workload for other heating and cooling installations in homes and buildings.
These solar powered attic fans are made of galvanized steel with steel flashing, so once they are installed on the roof they look neat and well fitted. The steel flashing in them prevents water from seeping in and also protects the roofing. Inside the outer cover of the attic fan there is a mesh inner cover to prevent debris, leaves and animals obstructing the fan.
These fans are best installed on the highest part of the roof possible. There are two main way to install them. Mounting them with the frame and flashing flush directly on the roof is one way. The other way is to use a roof vent and fix the fan on top of it on a pitched angle. Both these ways do not draw much attention to them and are therefore pretty low profile.
Once they are fixed on the roof configuring them is quite easy. Like many consumer electronics found today solar attic fans are pretty much plug and play kind of devices. Once you attach the solar panels most models work instantly. There is no additional wiring required. The size of the solar panels vary but normally they are around the size of those panels you find in garden features like water fountains.
As for the prices of these fans they vary depending on the size and wattage. Most products in the market range from US $199 to $450 with the most recommended brands being Honeywell, Sunrise Solar and Rand attic fans.
